Wedding Crashers Summary

For my final wiki, I chose to edit the Wedding Crashers article. I think this is such a hilarious movie that I'm happy to know that I added some important information to the movies wiki. For my first wiki edit, I decided to add some trivia since I love finding out facts like this about movies, especially for witty movies such as this one. My edits are still on the page. For the second wiki edit, I added the fact that the movie has recently been nominated for 5 MTV movie awards including Best Movie. This addition has remained untouched. For my final wiki edit I decided to add another fun fact that the famous "Lock it Up" banter was not even scripted. This edit also remains as I had wrote it.

I don't watch a lot of television but one show that my roommates and I are religious about watching is Nip/Tuck. I thought by editing this wiki I could also learn more about the show and it's elaborate characters. For my first edit I decided to add some interesting facts in the trivia section since I love finding out things like this about shows I watch all of the time. Unfortunately one of the two of my trivia facts was erased from the wiki. For the second wiki edit, I decided to add a link to the shows discussion board. I figure if fans are interested enough to check out the wiki in the first place they may also be included to discuss the show with other fans. This link has been kept on the site. For my last wiki edit I chose to add some more fun facts. I found it the hardest to edit this article since it is currently out of season.

Panic! at the Disco Summary

Currently my favorite band is Panic! at the Disco so naturally I felt it was appropriate to choose to edit their wiki article. I also thought it would be a good choice since they are a fairly new band who is constantly evolving and I hoped to add to the wiki site as the group changed. My first wiki edit was to announce that they will be touring this summer. I was happy to find that my edit was not only kept the same but someone put the edit into a category of its own called "touring". For my second edit I wrote about the fact that Panic! at the Disco's debut video is one of the top viewed videos on Youtube.com. This edit is still in tact the exact way that I added it. For my final wiki edit I decided to add a link that readers could follow in order to purchase Panic! gear online. Luckily this edit is exactly the same as well. I'm happy that I was able to make successful contributions to my favorite band's wiki article.

Facebook edit summary

For one of my wiki articles I chose to edit the Facebook page. I thought that this would be a very interesting topic to choose since it is such a popular website for college kids and is constantly changing and updating. My first wiki edit added the fact that if any facebook photo is found offensive that it can be anonomously reported to the website. This edit is still there today. My second wiki edit was concerning the sale of facebook.com. I thought it would be an interesting fact to add that the owners of the site were hoping to get around $2 million dollars to purchase the domain. My last wiki edit was to add that facebook was currently trying to build a wireless internet protocol so that users would be able to access the site from their cell phones. I thought that all of my edits were important facts to add to the wiki and I hope that other wiki readers feel the same.

I thought it would be interesting to write a blog entry about the Skype presentation given by Jason Howard from StudyLink. His company runs programs who make it possible for students to study abroad in other countries such as Australia, Europe, India, and Singapore. Today, StudyLink’s online course directory includes nearly 80,000 courses from all education levels, over 100,000 registered members and more than 100,000 applications in progress. I think this program offers a great opportunity for students around the world. Luckily at UDel we have a very organized study abroad program which makes it easy for students to study in other countries. I'm lucky enough to study abroad next winter in Australia and New Zealand through our school's international studies program.

I think out of all of the wikipedia articles that I chose, the Nip/Tuck wiki was the hardest to find things to edit. This probably has to do with the popularity of the show and the fact that the show is currently off season. The next new season doesn't begin until the fall at which time I'm sure there will be much more to add to this wiki. For my edit I decided to add more interesting facts about the show which includes:Dr. Christian Troy's character was originally named Dr. Christian Vega. The name was changed when Julian McMahon was cast in the role. In the first series, Roma Maffia's character (Liz) has the surname Winters. From series 2 onwards, her surname has changed to Cruz. Hopefully the viewers of this wiki will enjoy this update.

With funny movies like Wedding Crashers I like learning about behind the scenes kind of trivia. Therefore, I decided to add a couple fun facts to the wiki site concerning the film. "Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn improvised the famous "Lock it up!" banter". I thought this was a funny fact because it was such a big part of the movie I would have never thought that it was improvised. However, this doesn't surprise me because Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson are pretty witty guys. The next fact was "Following complaints from the United States Congress, the producers of the film yanked from the movie's official web site a printable Purple Heart advertised as a gimmick to pick up women and get free drinks." I thought it was funny that the government would get so offended by a joke in a movie that most of the public would find humorous.

Recently I found an article saying that Facebook, college social networking site–and chief MySpace competitor–will soon extend its mobile capabilities by enabling Internet-style browsing over cell phones. The announcement and soon-to-be launch of the browser expands on Facebook’s current text messaging service for its users. Facebook has just finished building a WAP, or wireless application protocol, that will offer a browsing service that more closely resembles the way the site works online. I decided to add this to the wiki site because I think that a lot of users of Facebook will be happy to know that they will soon be able to access the site by using their cell phones.

Recently I found an interesting fact about the band Panic! at the Disco and decided to add it to the band's wiki site. Panic! At the Disco's video of I Write Sins Not Tragedies is among YouTube's most-viewed videos. Posted three months ago, it has been streamed more than 5.4 million times. Streaming 35-million-plus videos a day, YouTube.com is one of the 100 most-visited sites. Considering how popular YouTube is I thought Panic! had an impressive amount of views and thought it should be added to the wiki.

Miserable Failure

Yesterdays presentation given by Dave was very interesting for a variety of reasons. I think I learned some important things about search engine optimization that I can hopefully bring to my future employer. It was also interesting to learn about how much of an effect bloggers can have on search results shown by our mini experiment of Loocsixela. However, this is best exhibited by the miserable failure case. Since I'm not the biggest fan of George W. I figured I should add to the search results as well.

After reading Becca's blog about MySpace I also thought that it would be interesting to write about this presentation. Since I'm also a facebook fan I was interested in seeing why so many people choose to participate on the MySpace network. Travis Katz presented a lot of features that MySpace offers as compared to the many other social networks. I think its a really great place for musicians to promote their music. I thought another really cool new feature was the profiles for comedians. Travis' presentation has definitely made me much more interested to find out what MySpace is all about.

Facebook has recently announced that it will allow graduated college students to continue using their .edu e-mail addresses to continue using the site. This move allows employees at 1,000 companies to be authenticated by the site. I think that this is an effort by Facebook to prevent their users from switching to another network such as MySpace. I added this under the Addition of Features section of the wiki.

I recently saw an article in Reuters reporting the nominations for MTV's movie awards. Luckily for my wiki edit needs, Wedding Crashers topped the list with 5 nominations including Best Movie. I thought fans of the movie would happy to have this fact added to main section of the wiki since this is a great movie and definitely deserves these awards.

IM advertising

I thought this article in Clickz was an interesting one in terms of marketing through instant messenger. I was very surprised to hear that only about 7% of advertisers use IM as part of their media plan. I think that many more companies should look into advertising this way because although instant messenger users are mostly young adults, their user base is starting to mature. The demographic range of users should make IM a good target for many advertisers. By advertising on instant messenger, companies will enable their audience to interact with the interface and visit their websites.

XBox Buzz

I came across a pretty cool article in Schobleizer's blog. Microsoft was able to organize an awesome event to celebrate selling 50,000 XBoxs in Australia while creating buzz which I'm sure will help sell even more. More than 2,900 gamers from around the world staged the world’s largest water balloon event in Sydney while raising money for a local lifesaving group. About 50,000 water balloons, the same number of Xbox 360 consoles that have been sold in the country since the launch on March 23, 2006, were thrown by participants. Gamers traveled from as far away as Asia, Europe, Latin America and the United States to take part in the event. Just another positive thing that Microsoft has to done to help rid its name of the "evil empire".

Interesting Concept

While reading through the slashdot articles I came across a very interesting one about scientists using the tongue as a superior transmittor. They use a narrow strip of red plastic to connect the Brain Port to the tongue where 144 microelectrodes transmit information through nerve fibers to the brain. By routing signals from helmet-mounted cameras, sonar and other equipment through the tongue to the brain, they hope to give elite soldiers superhuman senses similar to owls, snakes and fish. Seems like a pretty crazy idea to me but they are hoping to demonstrate the system to Navy and Marine divers in May.

The Smartest Robot Pet Yet

I found an interesting article in Schobalizer's blog about a new robot pet that will be coming out this fall. It's referred to as "Pleo" and unlike many other robot pets is fluid and seemingly spontaneous in it's movements. Included in the 3.3 pound Pleo is 38 sensors that are able to detect light, motion, touch, and sound. On the website is a pretty cool video showing how the Pleo works and responds to people.

In the beginning of the semester I had hoped to add a visual to the discography section in the Panic! at the Disco wikipedia article. However, someone beat me to it. Luckily the band has just announced its first headlining tour so I added some facts about the tour. This includes the dates of the tour which will be from June 6th until August 4th where they will perform at Lollapalooza. Panic! will also be joined by the bands The Dresden Dolls, The Hush Sound, and OK Go.

Before deciding what I wanted to change about the Facebook wiki, I searched Google in hopes that it would pull up some interesting news about the website. Luckily, just a few days ago Business Week published an article about talks involving the selling of the facebook website. Although the owners have been offered around $175 million for the site rights, they are hoping to get around $2 billion. Although it is a very high dollar amount, Viacom is the most likely buyer at the moment. I thought this would be an interesting article to add to the wiki's print media section.

Loocsixela Google Search

In an attempt to see how Google's search engine functions, we are starting up a whole new word: loocsixela, linking it to an unrelated site: www.packers.com, and seeing what this search produces in Google. Although Alex's blog is the only direct result for loocsixela, it also produces the link from his blog to www.packers.com. Hopefully after I publish this blog, my blog will also come up in the google search.

While reading my teammates blogs I was able to read a bunch of very interesting articles about the technology world. I didn't know before reading Erik's blog that Google had won its case with the government. I agree with Erik that our government shouldn't be able to recieve any information that infringes on its citizen's privacy rights.
Another teammates article that I found interesting was Becca's blog about the top 50 online advertisers. I had never realized before looking at this list just how many advertisements I have seen from these companies. I see most advertisements from classmates.com, amazon.com, and monster.com. I'm sure that this has much to do with the kinds of things that I search for and these companies must be targeting consumers like me.

Buzz Marketing

I know this post is a little late but I really wanted to blog about the Buzz Marketing presentation given by Mark Hughes. I thought it was incredibly interesting and creative how he thought of renaming a town to half.com. In turn he was able to help grow that business from zero to 8 million users in less than 3 years. I had never really thought that by getting media attention you could achieve much more success than just by plain old advertising. It's nice to see companies who try to interact with their customers rather than just making them listen to the same kind of boring advertisements.
This summer I am in a program - University of Dreams - that helps me find an internship in New York City. Right now I am in the process of figuring out which companies that I would like to send my resume to. As I stated in a previous post, I am looking into applying for an internship at Spin Magazine. However, this presentation sparked my interest in this type of marketing. On the list my program sent me, the company Buzztone (which is based on buzz marketing) also works with my program. I think this company may have just become my first choice for my internship this summer.

Vanity Search

The other day in class, Alex recommended that we do a vanity search on Google. It is important to see what kind of information is out about us on the internet. The first few were pretty accurate in that they were actually about me. The first 2 links were about the UD dance team - one being my The Review. The next few had to do with this class - my name shows up on Becca's blog and the class blog. The next few were not so accurate but by no means damaging to my reputation. One article is about a San Diego girl who is on a winning Under-9 soccer team and the other was a Sunset Hills student of the month. Judging by my search - "Meagan Harbison" produces no results that I should be worried about.

So today I added some blogs to my feeds on bloglines. First I decided to add The University of Delaware to keep up with all school news which unfortunately includes the latest on the skinhead teacher identification and delinquent athlete case. Next I subscribed to the Spin Magazine blog search because I really like the magazine and I'm hoping to get an internship there this summer. My third blogline addition was for the ArCtic Monkeys. I still don't know much about them but I figure by getting some blog feeds I can get some information and hopefully write a good blog to recieve extra credit. The final blog I subscribed to was for US Weekly because although I'm ashamed to admit it, I love entertainment news.

Not too reassuring

I came across a pretty interesting article from Slashdot today about web searches done on the CIA. The Chicago Tribune searched on the internet and other online databases finding a wealth of secret information about the agency. This information included the identities of over 2600 CIA employees (including an undisclosed number of covert operatives) as well as the locations of over two dozen CIA facilities across the U.S., internal telephone numbers, and information on 17 aircraft. I thought it was pretty scary that all of this information was so easily found on the web about a "top secret" American agency. It makes you wonder just how secure any "protected" information on the internet really is.

I decided to keep going with the same trivia idea and edit the Nip/Tuck page and add some more useless facts about the show. My next wiki edit was for the movie The Wedding Crashers. I decided to edit the trivia portion of the article because I love finding out useless, interesting things about movies. I added two pieces of trivia. The first being "At the Italian wedding, the guy who is sitting next to Owen Wilson and laughs at the "jabroni" joke is Wilson's uncle." The next useless fact about the movie I added was "A real wedding planner was hired for the production of the movie to ensure the weddings looked real. " Just thought they were little things that other people might find interesting.

Absurd amount of junk mail

Yesterday in class and during last week's skype presentation we touched on the topic of junk mail. We talked about different ways that companies may get your information and what type of e-mails they send out. During the skype presentation, Alex's friend talked about paypal and it's credibility. However, other people are able to take this name and put it on junk mail through a variety of ways. I recieved one yesterday and I thought I'd put it up for everyone to see since it seems like a real e-mail but I know it must not be because I've never had a paypal account.

I suppose they are just hoping that people will click on this site and give their real information. To support NASA or not?

When searching for interesting articles on my blog feeds, I came across an article about a cancelled space mission on Slashdot. Normally this title wouldn't have jumped out at me but I'm now in the middle of reading Dan Brown's book Deception Point. The underlying problem of this book is all of the wasted tax money put into projects for NASA. While reading the book I was curious if this was a problem in reality or just a fictional concept for the book. However, checking out this article I find that NASA really is having problems due to budget constraints and they are wasting millions of our tax dollars ($371 million to be exact) in the process. I understand the importance of NASA for our society but since reading this book and now this article I'm beginning to question just how strong my support for this association is.

Facebook Wikipedia edit

As I looked over my wikipedia topics I decided I first wanted to edit the Panic! at the Disco page. When looking at the page I saw that it lacked visuals. However, when I clicked to edit this section, I could only stare blankly at the screen with no idea where to go from there. I think by hoping to add a photo next to the discography was a little far fetched for my first edit. I will learn to do this and add it by the end of the course, but for right now I've decided to take it a little slower since this is only my first experience with the wikipedia.
Seeing I had little time left before the project was due, I decided to edit the Facebook site. There is a lot of information given on this topic considering its relative newness but I thought the photo section wasn't complete enough. So I've added "If any photo is found offensive, a member can anonymously "report" this using a link provided underneath the image. Facebook will monitor those complaints and remove photos as necessary." A small edit but just enough to get me started in the wiki scene.
